Our Program

Lida and her two-year-old son, Nazar, lived in Mala Divytsia, a village in northern Ukraine. For years, she suffered from domestic violence—psychological, economic, and physical—at the hands of her husband.
 
When Russia invaded Ukraine, Lida and her son were at home. The Russian military entered their home, but fortunately, they were not harmed. After five days, Lida and her son left for Kyiv, where her mother lived, but there was no room for Lida and her son to live comfortably in her mother's home.
 
After being connected with HealthRight’s Halfway House, they received safe temporary housing, humanitarian aid, and social, psychological, medical, and legal services. Hyper-local healthcare solutions saved Lida: “I realized I could get out of the cycle of violence, become independent and build a life for us.” Lida has already found a job and enrolled Nazar in a kindergarten.

Equitable Family Planning in Action

In partnership with UK AID, the Delivering Equitable & Sustainable Increases in Family Planning (DESIP) project is dedicated to increasing access to family planning services to marginalized women, people with disabilities, and adolescents in rural Kenya. In alignment with the Government of Kenya’s “Vision 2030,” HealthRight Kenya leads the efforts in the two counties of North Rift Valley. Our work has focused on strengthening the health and community systems for improved services uptake. 
    1. Increase family planning services use by >45% for people with disabilities (from 0.4% to 46%)
    2. Created a new mobile inventory system for community-based family planning

Holistic Care for Women, Children, and Adolescents

In partnership with UNICEF, we are building and implementing a comprehensive child protection and justice model that works to provide child survivors and witnesses of violence in Ukraine with social, physiological, legal, and medical resources. The program is based around the Barnahus model that creates a child-friendly environment to decrease stress and trauma while investigating criminal cases, and that provides children with comprehensive care. To continue to reach those in need, the online platform SupportME provides adolescent health information and psychosocial support for adolescents and their families. Through the website and social media, adolescents can access resources related to Covid-19, sexual, reproductive, and mental health as well as peer-to-peer support for HIV. 
    1. Six Barnhus centers operate across Vinnytsia, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, and Kyiv.
    2. A pool of 47 volunteer psychologists from Ukraine and abroad was created to provide mental health support to adolescents and youth who were affected by the war through SupportME

United States

Unaccompanied migrant children (UMCs) face many challenges navigating the immigration, health, and social service systems in the U.S. alone. Drawing on years of experience through our Human Rights Clinic (HRC), HealthRight is recruiting and training medical and mental health providers who specialize in pediatrics and child development to provide child-friendly and trauma-informed forensic evaluations and needs assessments for UMCs who have fled torture, abuse, and neglect in their home countries.

United States

Each year, thousands of survivors of torture and other severe human rights abuses flee persecution in their home countries, seeking asylum and other protections in the United States. Since 1993, HealthRight’s Human Rights Clinic (HRC) has trained, deployed and supported healthcare workers to provide critical forensic evaluations and case management services to immigrant survivors who have experienced torture, gender-based violence (GBV), LGBT-based persecution, female genital cutting (FGC), and human trafficking. The HRC has provided more than 5,500 forensic evaluations to over 4,800 survivors of torture and abuse from 130 countries.
