Salina Chepkonga, 65, has been a Traditional Birth Attendant in Cheptongei, Kenya for the past 28 years. She was educated by our partner, Sobon Support Group, a community-based organization in Kenya, on the benefits of giving birth in health facilities instead of at home. So far, she has referred and accompanied 12 mothers to Cheptongei Health Center and is inspired by the safety and the positive outcomes of the mother and baby when they are attended to in a facility that has equipment and trained staff to help in case of an emergency. Salina was recently invited by Cheptongei Health Center to attend a health facility management meeting where she was offered a gift of 1000 KSh from the maternity reimbursement fund as an appreciation of her work.
