2021 PETER C. ALDERMAN HEALTH + HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS

2021 PETER C. ALDERMAN HEALTH + HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS

On May 27, we gathered online at the 2021 Peter C. Alderman Health + Human Rights Awards. Together, we took a journey across continents to meet, honor, and amplify the voices of the brave individuals who make HealthRight’s work possible.

The event highlighted our four program areas: HIV, Mental Health, Survivors of Violence, and RMNCAH (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health). The ceremony featured HealthRight’s recent HIV prevention efforts in Kenya, including our distribution of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), to male sex workers in Malindi. It also showcased our work with mental health, specifically in Uganda. In the early 2000s, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency oppressed and abused many northern Ugandans, leaving many with trauma that prevailed long after the LRA had left the region. Through HealthRight’s Trust Fund for Victim’s project, we have provided physical and psychological treatment for these victims. The ceremony also focused on our Human Rights Clinic, our longest-running program which helps refugees and survivors of violence receive legal and medical assistance for the asylum process. The last part of the event showcased our work around RMNCAH, showing how women in rural Kenya are taking charge of their reproductive health and their lives. Most importantly, we took the opportunity to thank frontline health wrkers for their service and commitment to health and human rights, despite the strained global health systems.

With more than 250 participants from all over the world, we were able to raise over $200,000 in donations for HealthRight’s various programs. A special thank you to everyone who attended for your continuous support of our organization. You are helping marginalized communities around the world realize their right to health!
