When Susan,* a 54-year-old mother from Tegot Mission Village, first heard about HealthRight’s services through a community health worker, she was struggling in silence. Years of hardship due to the LRA conflict, including the loss of her business and home during a rebel ambush, family separation, and financial difficulties, had taken a toll on her mental and physical health. Suffering from debilitating headaches, dizziness, exhaustion, and difficulty concentrating, Susan made the decision to seek help at one of our partner hospitals through our TFV project.

After a comprehensive medical assessment, Susan was diagnosed with depression and PTSD. She was prescribed medication and referred to HealthRight’s psychosocial support team, where her journey to healing truly began. Through home visits, counseling sessions, and psychoeducation, our team worked closely with Susan and her family to ensure she received the care she needed. Over time, she regained emotional stability, reconnected with her social support network, and found a renewed purpose in life. 

Not long after, Susan returned to cassava farming, which enabled her to invest in her son's technical school education. She also joined a women’s support group in her village, where she built connections and strengthened her sense of community.

With renewed confidence, eventually Susan made the courageous decision to reunite with her family in Kitgum Namokora, where she continues to thrive with their support. Her story is one of resilience, healing, and hope.

When Tetiana,* a 23-year-old mother from Donetsk region, reached out to HealthRight’s psychologist in Lviv, she was overwhelmed. Raising her one-year-old son, Serhiy,* alone and navigating the emotional aftermath of a difficult separation, Tetiana was also facing the growing danger of renewed hostilities in her hometown.

A lifeline came in the form of a Social Apartment, part of HealthRight’s comprehensive network of protection and psychosocial services for women and children affected by war and crisis. Within hours of their conversation, our psychologist connected Tetiana to the team in Lviv, and she and her son were welcomed into a safe, stable, and supportive home—free of charge.

In Lviv, Tetiana received regular psychosocial counseling, where she worked to rebuild her self-esteem, develop emotional resilience, and learn positive parenting strategies in times of stress. She was also guided to essential resources—like the Humanitarian Center for Aid Distribution, where she received warm clothing and supplies for her son.

Today, Tetiana and Serhiy live in a comfortable, welcoming environment, where they are safe and supported—physically, emotionally, and socially. With the right help, Tetiana is now building a brighter future for herself and her son.

In Trans Nzoia County, Emmanuel Kundu, a bodaboda driver and member of the local SACCO, is one of many young men transforming their lives through our SACCO project . "For a long time," Emmanuel reflects, "many of us were afraid to go to the hospital for HIV testing. Some of us were too busy, others too scared. But now, thanks to HealthRight, these services have come to us—right where we work."

Through our partnership with community organizations and local health officials, we’ve brought HIV education, testing, mental health screening, and sexual health & mental health resources directly to transportation hubs, reaching young men who might have otherwise never accessed these services. Riders like Emmanuel have gained not only access to testing and protection tools like condoms, but also critical knowledge.

The program’s reach extends beyond urban centers, with educational sessions reaching riders in rural areas, where access to health information was once nearly nonexistent. "Now, even people deep in the villages are learning how to stay safe. You can come with your family to a session—it’s for everyone."

For Emmanuel, the impact is clear: his outlook on health, family, and community has changed. "HealthRight has brought us tools and knowledge that are saving lives. It’s up to us to use them—and protect what matters most."
