CURRENT PROJECTS:

KENYA

Since 2004, HealthRight has worked to build lasting access to health for the economically and geographically isolated communities of Kenya’s Northern Rift Valley.  HealthRight is partnering with Kenyan health providers and local communities to respond to three areas of critical need: HIV/AIDS, malaria and maternal and neonatal health. HealthRight has successfully implemented programs to improve health outcomes for mothers and infants, build access to malaria prevention and treatment and create care and support services for over 1,700 people living with HIV in five districts of Kenya. MEXICO

HealthRight began working with local indigenous communities in Chiapas, Mexico, following the Zapatista uprising in 1994. In 2006, HealthRight began a program to educate communities about tuberculosis and to change behavior related to seeking diagnosis and completing treatment.  HealthRight worked in partnership with local indigenous organizations to disseminate accurate information about TB and to strengthen coordination between indigenous communities and the health system.  Lessons learned from the model have been shared with TB education and care programs in other parts of the country with similarly high rates.  Learn more…

NEPAL

Maternal and newborn mortality in Nepal are among the highest in the world, and regional disparities in health system coverage mean that some communities face even worse rates.  HealthRight’s Partnership for Maternal and Neonatal Health in Nepal is working with local partners and the health system to lower maternal and newborn deaths and to build lasting access to maternal and neonatal health care for rural communities in Kapilvastu and Arghakhachi. RUSSIA

Since 1994, HealthRight’s programs in Russia have focused on building access to rights-based health and social services for individuals and families facing exclusion and discrimination within what is otherwise a functioning health system.  Our projects with street youth have worked to address the many challenges they face in survival and in building a health future, from shelter and housing, to job training and education, to HIV prevention and treatment.  Our MAMA+ project, first developed in St. Petersburg in 1994 to prevent child abandonment by building access to comprehensive care for HIV-positive mothers, has served hundreds of families and has since been replicated in other countries from Ukraine to Viet Nam.  Throughout, HealthRight has focused on building local capacity and advocating for policy changes within the health system to ensure that our efforts build access to rights-based care  for years to come. UKRAINE

Along with one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world, Ukraine also faces increasing rates of HIV-infection among women, many of whom have a history of injection drug usage (IDU). Along with the government and local partners, HealthRight is working to increase access to health and social services for HIV-positive and IDU mothers and pregnant women through the MAMA+ project. In addition to providing services, HealthRight is also performing research on national HIV-testing policies and working to raise awareness of treatment options for IDUs, especially women. UNITED STATES

Since 1994, HealthRight’s Human Rights Clinic has provided assistance to those seeking asylum and other forms of immigration relief in the U.S.  HRC trains and mobilizes the health sector to provide clinical evaluations to document signs of torture and abuse and prepare expert evidence for use in immigration proceedings. HRC also acts as a bridge between survivors of torture and medical and social support services through the ASSIST program, which enables asylum seekers to overcome the daily challenges of resettlement and accessing follow-up care. VIET NAM

In Viet Nam, stigmatization and fragmented health services have led to limited or no access to care for vulnerable populations. HealthRight is working with local partners to increase access to community based care for women, children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. This program, which builds upon the  MAMA+ Project in Russia and Ukraine, is working to create lasting access to health for the communities we serve, while combating the stigma and discrimination that often lead to denial of life-saving care.  Learn more…
